BRAZILLIAN JUI JITSU

BRAZILIAN
JIU JITSU

A BRIEF HISTORY
In 1914, a prominent Judo master and fighter from Japan named Mitsuyo Maeda emigrated to Brazil. He was befriended and assisted by a Brazilian politician named Gastao Gracie. In appreciation, Maeda offered to teach his martial art to Gastao’s young son, Carlos. Carlos in turn taught his other brothers, most notably Helio Gracie. Modifying their lessons and blending them with Brazilian street and indigenous fighting methods, they refined their techniques and developed a system they named Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.
Today, most of the world knows Gracie Jiu-Jitsu by its more generic name, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Through the years, knowledge has been passed from teacher to student, carrying personality and wisdom from each contributor. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu carries with it an expectation of respect for all who enter into the teacher-student relationship. Its hallmark is the adaptation process it constantly goes through, where new techniques and perspectives are always being developed. This adds much creativity to the overall learning process.

WHAT TO EXPECT
The BJJ Program focuses on developing strong fundamentals on position and technique. Our adult classes are divided between two variations of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Gi and NoGi (kids classes are strictly Gi only). The focus and layout of each class is geared towards constant development. We start with warm-ups and drills, follow with technique and theory. Also included with the program is conditioning that implements exercises specifically designed to improve the student's cardio, strength and stamina. Once a student has one stripe on their white belt they may attend Randori (emphasizing live training or rolling with a partner) which develops the student’s sensitivity to balance and timing while using techniques. BJJ Fundamentals classes are open to all belts, however this class will focus on the white belt to blue belt curriculum. No-Gi, Randori, and Saturday Open Gym Sessions may be attended by practitioners of all belt stripes & levels. No matter your skill level, whether you are looking to get fit, find a recreational activity, push yourself and compete, or just something try something fun and new, our BJJ programs will provide a lifetime of opportunity and enjoyment.
